Historical Significance

The town’s history dates back to the feudal era when it was an important castle town. Today, Hida Furukawa retains much of its historical charm, with well-preserved white-walled storehouses and traditional merchant houses lining its streets.

Scenic Beauty

One of the town’s most iconic features is the Setogawa Canal, which runs through the center of Hida Furukawa. Flanked by beautiful white-walled storehouses, the canal is home to colorful koi fish from April to November, creating a serene and picturesque atmosphere. The combination of the flowing water, traditional architecture, and seasonal changes makes for stunning photo opportunities year-round.

Cultural Attractions

Hida Furukawa Festival Hall

Visitors can experience the town’s rich festival culture at the Hida Furukawa Festival Hall. Here, you can learn about the famous Furukawa Festival, held annually on April 19th and 20th. The hall showcases festival floats and offers interactive experiences like operating karakuri dolls and trying your hand at the festival drums.

Seasonal Events

The town hosts several seasonal events, including the atmospheric “Santera Mairi” in January, where locals visit three temples in the dark of night, guided only by candlelight.

Sake breweries

Two sake breweries stand side by side in the centre of town, in the old streets. Unlike the breweries in Takayama City, they are not crowded with tourists and visitors can enjoy tasting and shopping at their leisure.

Connection to “Your Name” (Kimi no Na wa)

Hida-Furukawa gained international recognition as one of the inspirations for the hit anime film “Your Name” (Kimi no Na wa) by Makoto Shinkai. While the fictional town in the movie is a composite of several locations, many scenes bear a striking resemblance to Hida-Furukawa’s streetscapes and surrounding landscapes. Fans of the film often visit to see the real-life locations that inspired the beautiful backgrounds in the movie.

Train users should pay attention to the timetable. There are very few trains between Takayama and Hida Furukawa.

For visitors interested in immersing themselves in the local atmosphere, some shops offer kimono and yukata rentals, allowing you to stroll through the historic streets in traditional Japanese attire. Hida-Furukawa’s blend of historical architecture, natural beauty, cultural experiences, and its connection to popular media make it a unique and rewarding destination for international travelers. Whether you’re interested in Japanese history, traditional crafts, scenic beauty, or anime pilgrimages, this small town offers a rich tapestry of experiences that showcase the essence of rural Japan.
